….MPs Who Supported Him in Parliamentary Debate – his words will be read by Jeremy Corbyn in main chamber tomorrow.

For immediate release

In Moving Message from Guantánamo, Shaker Aamer, the Last British Resident in the Prison, Thanks MPs Who Supported Him in Parliamentary Debate, and Delegation Who Visited Washington to Call for His Release

In a recent letter to his lawyers, Shaker Aamer said: “I was reading the parliamentary debate on my case. I was shocked to see how much these MP’s really care, not only care but really engage and ask the smart questions. I love these good people, not only for asking to release me, but for their effort to close Guantánamo, and how much they are against it.”

Tomorrow (1st June), as part of the ‘Britain in the World’ debate in the House of Commons, Jeremy Corbyn MP, one of the four MPs who visited Washington D.C. two weeks ago to call for Shaker Aamer’s release from Guantánamo, will read out the full text of a letter in which Shaker thanks all the MPs who spoke up for him in the Parliamentary debate in March that led to a unanimous call for his release, and the delegates who visited Washington D.C.

In the letter, provided to We Stand With Shaker by Reprieve, Shaker also thanks his long-time supporters Dr. David Nicholl and Pink Floyd legend Roger Waters:

“I want to thank Dr David Nicholl from Birmingham, who is running a marathon for me – I hope you win your marathon, David, just as I hope I win mine [here in Guantánamo].”

“And my special thanks and gratitude goes to the legend Roger Waters. I saw you on RT speaking good about me and asking for my freedom, next to “Shaker the balloon” [the inflatable figure of Shaker that is at the heart of the We Stand With Shaker campaign]. Please, Roger, don’t ask for justice — demand it. Be sure, Roger, you and everyone else, that I am an innocent man and a good person who never participated in any animal harm let alone human being. We are in Gitmo as the back sheep of U.S. government.”

The delegation to Washington D.C. consisted of the MPs David Davis, Andrew Mitchell, Andy Slaughter and Jeremy Corbyn. They were met warmly by Senators John McCain, Dianne Feinstein, Patrick Leahy, Dick Durbin and Joseph Manchin. They also met with Paul Lewis, the Special Envoy for Guantánamo Closure in the Pentagon, and Charles Trumbull, the Acting Special Envoy for Guantánamo Closure in the State Department. Following the visit, Andrew Mitchell said: “I am confident that we made some progress on our visit, but it is the most extraordinary injustice.”
